| At Prestwick, at the south end of the promenade, on the golf course, you will see two small buildings. These are the salt pan houses which once produced salt in shallow ponds between the two buildings. Once evaporated the product was heated by brick vaults. The salt industry dates back to the 15th century. The salt pan houses date from 1760. The salters lived above the salt drying area and you can still see the outside stairways which led to their quarters. Salt was highly taxed and the industry suffered from smuggled salt which was brought in from Ireland. |
