Getting to Muirkirk
From the West you can travel to Muirkirk via the A76 from Kilmarnock joining the A70 East at Cumnock. Alternatively from Ayr you can follow the A70 from the Holmston roundabout to Cumnock and then onward to Muirkirk which is around 9 miles from Cumnock.

If you are traveling from other areas then you can reach Muirkirk by leaving the M74 at junction 12 and traveling West through Douglas and on a further 9 miles to Muirkirk.

There is a layby alongside the A70 on the south side of the road with a Covenanter's Heritage information display. Most walks start from the car park 1/4 of a mile along Furnace Road towards the caravan site. To access John Brown's Walk North of Muirkirk take the B743 towards Strathaven for around 1.25 miles and take the small road on the right which crosses the river. The car park is around 1/8 of a mile on the right.
